Forces Veterans, Children of Service Families Celebrate Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

The party had been planned by the children of HMS Heroes – a group set up and run by the children of Service families with the support of Plymouth City Council.

About 60 children from Schools all over Plymouth and 40 veterans attended the party. The children designed the invitations and the menu and created the table decorations and even arranged the entertainment.

During the party children and veterans enjoyed the music of the Samba Band from Marlborough School.

The Naval Base Commander, Commodore Steve Dearden, cut the specially designed celebratory cake with veteran Fred Davey MBE aged 85, Sophie, 5, and Connor the Standard Bearer.

The Commodore said:

“The children of HMS Heroes have planned a brilliant party and with the lovely sunshine here today I am sure it will be a day for all of them to remember.”

Heather Ogburn a senior adviser from the Education Learning and Family Support unit at Plymouth City Council said:

“I would like to say a big thank you to HMS Drake and Commodore Dearden for allowing this party to happen today and a big thank you to all the young people from HMS Heroes who have planned the whole event.”
