HNLMS Evertsen Completes Counterpiracy Operations Off Horn of Africa

After having taken part in the Ocean Shield counterpiracy operation, HNLMS Evertsen arrived back in her home port of Den Helder on 18 August. Defence Minister Hans Hillen emphasised the importance of the mission for the Netherlands.

“Our prosperity depends, after all, on free trade, the unimpeded transport of goods by sea and free access to raw materials. Clothes, shoes, electronic equipment, cars and fuel can then reach the Netherlands unhindered and remain affordable to all.”

During the past 3 months, the air defence and command frigate Evertsen operated in the waters around the Horn of Africa. In addition to counterpiracy operations and the protection of merchant shipping, HNLMS Evertsen also carried out several patrols close to the Somali coast. Valuable information was gathered concerning coastal activities and normal living patterns. This information can be used to quickly recognise deviating patterns and thus combat piracy more effectively.
