Russian Maritime Register of Shipping to Perform Survey of Russian Navy Training Ship Smolny

Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) will perform survey of the Russian Navy training ship Smolny under repair. The relevant agreement was concluded between RS and JSC Rosoboronexport.

The RS activities include survey of the ship’s hull, machinery, electrical equipment and arrangements under repair, participation in mooring and sea trials. The repairs will be performed in Varna, Bulgaria.

Survey of the ship under repair is aimed at confirmation of compliance of the items repaired with the requirements of the RS Rules, design documentation, as well as other applicable regulatory documents.

According to Mikhail Ayvazov, RS Chief Executive Officer, recommencement of full-sized cooperation with the Russian Navy is one of the major components of the RS development strategy. In the 1980s in the USSR a number of Navy ships and auxiliary vessels were developed, the hulls, propulsion plants and ship’s systems of which were designed meeting the requirements of the RS Rules. RS was also directly engaged in survey during construction of auxiliary vessels for the USSR Navy. “The RS involvement in classification and survey of modern ships and in future of Russian Navy ships will allow to design them based on the latest achievements in the world’s shipbuilding industry and the requirements of the international conventions on safety of navigation and environmental protection,” – emphasizes Mikhail Ayvazov.
