Guided Missile Destroyer USS McCampbell Rescues Filipino Fishermen

A guided missile destroyer USS McCampbell of the George Washington CSG rescued five Filipino fishermen yesterday morning. The fishermen were drifting off Lubang Island in Mindro, the MB reports.

Tina Malone, the US Embassy information officer said that the fishermen were spotted by helicopter pilots of the warship while  flashing a lighter from the roof of their boat — the only part of it left above water.

The destroyer was conducting a routine night-time flight operations in the area.

“The five men were quickly recovered and taken on board the McCampbell, approximately one hour after initial discovery. The individuals were evaluated by the ship’s medical personnel and found to be in good health,” said Malone.
