US Navy Region Japan Announces Installation Excellence Award Recipients

Commander, Navy Region Japan (CNRJ) announced the recipients of the Navy Region Japan Installation Excellence Awards Nov. 13.

Rear Adm. Dan Cloyd announced Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) and Commander Fleet Activities Okinawa (CFAO) as the recipients of the large and small installation awards, respectively.

This year is the second time that installations were reviewed within the two different categories: large installations, (CFAY winner) with more than 500 personnel and, small installations (CFAO winner) with less than 500 personnel.

“This year’s two selectees represent what I humbly believe are six outstanding installation teams that selflessly provide truly exceptional support to the fleet, fighters and families of the Forward Deployed Naval Forces,” said Cloyd.

Joseph A. Salvatore, CNRJ’s director of Strategy and Future Requirements and member of the award’s board said it was a challenge choosing one installation out of six that equally do great things day in and day out.

“These awards really show what great efforts the installations are putting forward to take care of our military families while being good stewards of government funds management and energy conservation,” said Salvatore.

“Choosing the winner of this year’s large installation award was tough,” said Salvatore. “However, CFAY stood out with their exceptional role in energy conservation and an extraordinary number of far-reaching community relations projects which earned the installation numerous energy conservation and safety awards.”

Salvatore said it was an equally big challenge for board members to select the recipient of the small installation award, but CFAO lead the pack with their outstanding port operations, despite one pier being damaged and a record amount of typhoon activity. CFAO also stood out by being the only installation to manage both air and port operations.

Both installations are now endorsed to compete with other Navy installations worldwide for the 2013 Commander, Navy Installations Command Installation Excellence Awards to be given at the beginning of next year.
