HMAS Yarra, HMAS Huon Lower Their Gangways for Open Day

The Hunter turned out in force on Australia Day to tour two of Navy’s Minehunter, Coastal (MHC).

HMAS Yarra (IV) and HMAS Huon (II) lowered their gangway for an Open Day as part of the Newcastle Maritime Festival, with approximately 2,500 people lining up for a look.

Tours of the bridge, briefings on the remotely operated Mine Disposal Vessel and Clearance Diving equipment proved popular.

Sub Lieutenant Nathan Phillips said it was a fun day for the crew of the MHCs’ as well as the public.

“It was a great opportunity to show off the MHC’s which were built locally in Newcastle.”

“The community started lining up half an hour before the gates opened and everyone really enjoyed the chance to learn a little about life in the Navy. Many kids and dads did not want to leave,” said SBLT Phillips.
