USS Gravely Undergoes Gas Turbine Generator Change Out

Norfolk Ship Support Activity (NSSA) completed a gas turbine generator (GTG) change out on USS Gravely (DDG 107) Jan. 25.

The ship was underway completing a three-week workup when the number 3 GTG failed, limiting the ship’s functionalities, resulting in the decision to return to Norfolk for repairs.

NSSA’s Gas Turbine Shop (Code 31T) were able to diagnose the problem and identify required repairs through photos and direct communication with ships force.

“The goal was to get this ship in and out as quickly as possible, and to also make sure the job was executed properly the first time. Engine change outs of this nature normally take about three to four days, but my guys were able to complete this job in 24 hours, “said Master Chief Gas Turbine Systems Ashley Horn, NSSA’s Gas Turbine Shop leading chief petty officer.

Horn commended NSSA team lead, Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical) 2nd Class Robert Meade on an outstanding job leading his 10 personnel team in the time critical replacement of the generator.

“With our ability to provide these change outs with such a quick turnaround, we can keep ships focused on their missions,” said Capt. James Talbert, NSSA’s production officer. “Great teamwork everyone on the Gravely job.”
