UK: HMS Edinburgh Heads Home

HMS Edinburgh Heads Home

The Royal Navy’s last Type 42 destroyer has left New York and is heading home following a highly successful visit to the Big Apple.

At the end of this month, HMS Edinburgh will return to her home port of Portsmouth and bring to an end 30 years of loyal service to the Royal Navy as she is being decommissioned this summer.

Aerial photos taken from Edinburgh’s Lynx helicopter show Edinburgh slipping out of New York harbour with the sprawling cityscape behind her.

During her visit to New York, she hosted US businesspeople, NATO delegates, and promoted UK interests worldwide in support of the UK’s International Defence Engagement Strategy.

Before decommissioning in June, HMS Edinburgh will take part in Battle of the Atlantic 70 commemoration events. The commemorations will be centred on three British cities, London from 8-13 May, Derry/Londonderry between 10-12 May, and the culminating event in Liverpool from 24-27 May.
