The Philippines: Coast Guard Searches for Missing Fisherman

Elements of Coast Guard Station (CGS) Basco is searching for a reported missing fisherman onboard his non-motorized banca at the vicinity waters of Diura, Mahatao, Batanes yesterday, 07 April.

The incident was reported by his wife, Teresita Carzon, who disclosed that his husband Artemio Carzon, 58 years old and resident of Brgy Uyoy, Mahatao, Batanes went on fishing venture but failed to return home as expected.

Immediately, personnel of CGS Basco coordinated with local fisherfolks of Basco and Mahatao, Batanes to conduct search and rescue (SAR) operation to subject fisherman. CGS Basco together with SOU-NELZN and civilian volunteers conducted SAR operation at vicinity waters of Diura, Mahatao, Batanes for possible sighting of missing fisherman but yielded negative report.

CGS Basco personnel also conducted foot patrol at vicinity of Basco, Mahatao, Ivana and Uyugan, Batanes in search for the said fisherman. The team subsequently received information from Licinio Merin, Brgy Captain of Brgy Uyoy, Mahatao, Batanes that the non-motorized banca of subject fisherman was seen along the shoreline or Diura Fishing Village of said barangay. Teresita Carzon positively identified the found boat to be that of his missing husband.

According to the fisherfolk who found the banca, it was seen drifting along Diura Fishing Village around 2:00PM yesterday and was damaged on its starboard side.

CGS Basco continued disseminating to all fisherfolks, motor banca operators and coastal barangay officials to be on the look-out of said missing fisherman and report immediately to the nearest Coast Guard Station/Detachment if sighted.
