Second Italian Naval Group Engages in Spanish Minex 2014
On September 11, the Standing NATO Mine Counter-Measures Group 2 (SNMCMG2) continued sailing the Mediterranean after a short port visit in Casablanca.
SNMCMG2 is currently composed of the flagship Italian frigate ITS Aviere, command and logistical support ship Godetia (Belgium), minehunters Evropi (Greece), Duero (Spain), Grimsby (UK), Homburg (Germany) and Erdek (Turkey).
The Second Italian Naval Group, led by Italian Captain Giovanni Piegaja, is participating in the Spanish Minex 2014 exercise organized by the Spanish Navy until next September 23.
The advanced exercise is carried out in a fictional scenario where a crisis occurs between a country ruled by dictatorship and a democratic country (Cartagoland and Palosland). The Naval Group will have to search, locate, classify, identify and simulate the neutralization of drifting mines.
