Authorities

27 people were saved near Alboran Island, Spain, in yet another migrant rescue mission carried out on September 21.

Spanish Navy’s vessels ESPS Mar Caribe and ESPS Vencedora, along with members of the Navy’s Detachment on the island, were involved in the rescue operation.

After receiving an alert by the Maritime Surveillance and Operations Centre (COVAM), ESPS Mar Caribe located the smuggling vessel heading for the island. After the navy confirmed there was no risk to human life, the rescue vessel Guardamar Polimnia took over the operation. ESPS Vencedora joined the rescue mission when the small boat arrived at the island.

The migrants, 23 men, three women and a child, sailing from Africa, were later transported to Almeria aboard Guardamar Polimnia.
