Authorities

After it was united with the Italian aircraft carrier Cavour, the Belgian Navy’s frigate Leopold I (F930) joined the rest of the EUNAVFOR Med fleet in the Mediterranean.

The vessel marked its first week of patrol in the international waters off the coast of Libya as part of the Operation Sophia. During this time Leopold I was able to display its readiness in the presence of the Force Commander, Italian Navy Rear Admiral (LH) Andrea Gueglio. Leopold I showed its skills in a simulation of a smuggler craft interception involving the use of the embarked “bluebird” helicopter and close coordination with the flagship ITS Cavour.

The frigate was further tested in a migrant rescue exercise with the British patrol boat HMS Enterprise. With this, the crew got introduced to the procedures of registration, searches, interrogation and medical and psychological assistance.

Leopold I also conducted a Replenishment at sea maneuver with the German supply ship FGS Berlin.

The frigate is currently taking a short break to resupply its stock during a port visit.
