EUNAVFOR Med operation Sophia Force Commander, Rear Admiral (LH) Andrea Gueglio, visited the Icelandic Coast Guard vessel Tyr, operating under Frontex agency mission’s Triton, on November 8.

Arriving on board, Admiral Gueglio was welcomed by Tyr’s Commanding Officer, CDR Finar H. Vaisson, who guided him throughout the ship describing her capabilities and main activities conducted since the first day of involvement in Operation Triton.

During the visit, both officers took the chance to underline the cooperation between EUNAVFOR Med operation Sophia and Frontex, focusing on common priorities to prevent further loss of lives at sea and contribute in disrupting the business model of human smuggling and trafficking networks in the Central Mediterranean.

Operation Triton is a border security operation conducted by Frontex, the European Union’s border security agency. The operation, under Italian command, began on November 1, 2014 and involves voluntary contributions from 15 other European nations.

Since its launch on June 22, 2015, EUNAVFOR Med operation Sophia closely cooperated with all governmental and non-governmental regional and international activities including the Italian Operation Mare Sicuro, Frontex Operation Triton and also with Europol and Eurojust.
