VIDEO: HMCS Toronto removed from dry dock during mid-life refit

The Royal Canadian Navy has shared a video of HMCS Toronto, a Halifax-class frigate, being removed from Irving Shipbuilding’s dry dock as part of the ship’s mid-life upgrade.

HMCS Toronto is the seventh and final frigate on the East coast expected to complete its modernization by Irving Halifax Shipyard in late summer 2016.

Once Toronto gets underway following the completion of upgrades, all twelve of the Halifax-class frigates, five on the west coast and seven on the east coast, will have been fully modernized.

HMCS Regina, the fifth and final frigate on the west coast to complete its modernization was returned to the Royal Canadian Navy in May 2016.

Seaspan Victoria Shipyards was responsible for modernization of five west coast frigates HMCS Calgary, HMCS Winnipeg, HMCS Vancouver, HMCS Ottawa and HMCS Regina, while Irving Halifax Shipyard upgraded the other seven Halifax-class frigates.

The Halifax-Class Modernization/Frigate Life Extension (HCM/FELEX) refit project is a CAD$4.3 billion undertaking which includes a new CMS330 combat management system procured from Lockheed Martin Canada, as well as new radar capability, a new electronic warfare system, and upgraded communications technologies and missiles.
