VIDEO: India’s indigenous missile-assisted torpedo system launched

India’s Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has revealed that its supersonic missile-assisted torpedo system was successfully launched from Wheeler Island in Odisha on 13 December.

As informed, the system is a next-generation missile-based standoff torpedo delivery system. During the mission, the full range capability of the missile was successfully demonstrated, according to the officials.

The new system has been designed to enhance anti-submarine warfare capability and has a far greater range than conventional torpedoes. It consists of advanced technologies viz. two-stage solid propulsion, electro-mechanical actuators and precision inertial navigation. 

To test its capabilities, DRDO launched it from a ground mobile launcher. This was a textbook launch, where the entire trajectory was monitored by the electro-optic telemetry system, various range radars, including the downrange instrumentation and downrange ships, the officials pointed out.

The missile, which can cover a range of distances, carried a torpedo, parachute delivery system and release mechanisms. 

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh congratulated the teams involved in the successful test of the supersonic missile assisted torpedo system and said, the development of the system is a perfect example of building futuristic defence systems in the country. 

Secretary, Department of Defence R&D & Chairman DRDO, G Satheesh Reddy has congratulated all those involved in the successful test. He said, the system will further enhance the strength of the navy and promote self-reliance in defense, harnessing expertise and capabilities.

Meanwhile, the Indian Navy revealed its plans to work on the expansion of the fleet. Recently, the navy commissioned INS Vela, the fourth submarine in the series of six submarines of Project-75 at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.
