Hanwha Ocean begins developing energy system for unmanned submarine

South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean, formerly known as Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME), has begun developing energy system for an unmanned submarine using its submarine construction capabilities.

The shipbuilder shared the update on its social media channels on October 4, 2023.

Hanwha Ocean announced it was recently selected as the preferred bidder for the ‘Energy Source System for Unmanned Submarine’ project – a prototype project of the Agency for Defense Development.

The Agency for Defense Development is the South Korean national agency for research and development in defense technology, funded by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration.

The project in which Hanwha Ocean is participating this time is the development of a multi-purpose modular unmanned submarine hydrogen fuel cell system’.

The shipbulder said it will develop the technology for the energy source of the multi-purpose modular unmanned submarine, produce prototypes for performance verification, and provide design verification support and testing support services necessary for the project.
