The Portuguese Navy currently operates a single replenishment ship, which will be replaced by the two new vessels, set to be designed and built by STM.

It is understood that the 137-meter auxiliary oiler replenisher and logistics (AOR+) vessels will displace 11,000 tonnes, have a top speed of 18 knots, and be capable of operating at sea for 90 days. As disclosed, they will be able to accommodate up to 100 personnel and transport up to 20 light tactical armored vehicles. Each ship will reportedly have air defense capability and support helicopter and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations.

According to STM, the vessels’ design ensures they are adaptable to a wide range of missions, including humanitarian aid, search and rescue, and medical operations.

Chris Nelson, Naval Sales Director for Kongsberg Maritime, stated: “We have worked with STM before, and this new contract cements our relationship with STM. Interest is rising among the world’s navies for effective RAS/FAS equipment, and our solutions are safe, efficient, and tested.”

To note, the contract between STM and the Portuguese Navy is said to mark the first time that STM will provide naval vessels to a European Union (EU) and NATO member state.
