Norway formalized an order for two additional Type 212CD submarines, commissioningTKMS to build the vessels as part of a joint program with Germany, the company said.

The contract signing in Oslo expands the Royal Norwegian Navy’s planned fleet from four to six submarines and marks a major extension of one of the largest orders in TKMS’s history. Combined with Germany’s earlier commitments, the program has now reached its planned maximum of 12 submarines.

Germany signed contracts in December 2024 to procure four additional 212CD submarines for its navy, increasing its own order from an initial two to six boats. The latest Norwegian decision brings the total number of submarines ordered under the program to 12.

“With this strategically important and now growing project, we are making a decisive contribution to strengthening Europe’s defense capabilities and the relationship between the two countries. We are equally pleased about the continued trust placed in the quality of our work and products, as well as the existing partnership,” TKMS Chief Executive Oliver Burkhard said.

Type 212CD is designed to offer enhanced situational awareness, improved connectivity with allied forces, and a reduced acoustic signature. TKMS has described it as the world’s most advanced conventional submarine, capable of operating in demanding environments, including the Arctic.

The joint approach is intended to ensure full NATO compatibility while delivering efficiencies through shared research and development, training, logistics and maintenance. According to the company, the program is expected to generate industrial benefits for both Germany and Norway.

TKMS said the next phase could see the program expanded further, with the potential inclusion of up to 12 submarines for Canada.

The new German-Norwegian submarine type is based on the Type 212A which is already in service with the German Navy and also with the Italian naval forces, and bears the designation 212CD.
