Lockheed Martin has been awarded a contract worth $478.4 million by the US Navy to support and produce advanced imaging systems for submarines, reinforcing its role in undersea warfare technology.

The contract, issued by Naval Sea Systems Command, covers engineering and technical support as well as production of the integrated submarine imaging system for both new-construction and in-service submarines.

If all options are exercised, the total value of the contract could rise to approximately $1.19 billion, highlighting the long-term scope of the Navy’s investment in submarine sensor and imaging capabilities.

Work will be carried out in Manassas, Virginia, through March 2036. Initial funding of $600,000 from the Navy’s fiscal 2025 other procurement account will be used to meet the contract’s minimum guarantee and kick off early engineering efforts.

The procurement was conducted under full and open competition, although only one offer was received, underscoring the specialized nature of submarine imaging technologies and the limited pool of qualified suppliers, according to the officials.

The integrated submarine imaging system plays a critical role in enhancing situational awareness for submarine crews, supporting navigation, surveillance, and mission execution in complex undersea environments.

Last month, Lockheed Martin unveiled the Lamprey multi-mission autonomous undersea vehicle (MMAUV), a ‘plug-and-play’ submersible that can hitch a ride on ships or submarines. LampreyMMAUV can perform a wide range of missions, including delivering undersea and air kinetic and non-kinetic effects; performing intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, targeting, and multi-intelligence collection; and deploying equipment to the seafloor.
