USA: General Dynamics Lands LPDs Contract

General Dynamics Lands LPDs Contract

General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. has been awarded a $29,238,918 modification to a previously awarded contract.

The contract includes shakedown availability of USS San Diego (LPD 22) and the fitting-out availability of USS Anchorage (LPD 23).

Specific efforts incorporate program management, planning, engineering, design, liaison, scheduling, labor, and procurement of incidental material in support of the post shakedown availability and fitting out availability.

USS Anchorage (LPD-23), a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, is the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for Anchorage, Alaska.

Anchorage’s keel was laid down on 24 September 2007, at the Avondale Shipyard in New Orleans, Louisiana, back then owned by Northrop Grumman Ship Systems. The ship was launched on 12 February 2011. She was christened two months later, on 14 May – the first ship christened by Huntington Ingalls Industries since Northrop Grumman spun off its ship-building divisions as a separate company. The ship’s sponsor is Annette Conway, wife of former Marine Corps Commandant General James T. Conway.

PCU San Diego (LPD-22), a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, is the fourth ship of the United States Navy to be named for San Diego, California. The city is the home of Naval Base San Diego, the Navy’s largest base in the Pacific, and Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, the United States Marine Corps’ west coast recruit training center. The ship is designed to deliver a fully equipped Marine battalion of 699 officers and enlisted men.

The work will be performed in San Diego, California and is expected to be completed by December 2014.
