NF Ships to Participate in Pomor-2012

Final bilateral planning conference of the Pomor-2012 joint exercise will be held in Northern Fleet (NF) main naval base Severomorsk on board large ASW ship Admiral Chabanenko in Apr 10-12.

Norwegian military delegation arriving in Severomorsk will include Chief of Naval Operations at Norwegian National Joint HQ Capt Lars Saunes, training officer at Norwegian Air Force Lt Col Erik Solem, international military cooperation officer Cmdr Knut Knagelheim, Norwegian military attaché assistant Lt Christian Hanstad, etc.

Meeting on board the Russian warship, the parties will make final decision on the exercise episodes. At the last planning conference held early March in Norway, representatives of Russia’s Northern Fleet introduced a number of proposals putting high emphasis on interaction during joint search-and-rescue operations.

Russia and Norway are going to conduct the Pomor joint exercise for the fourth time. Main objective is to practice interoperability between Norwegian and Russian naval and air forces in the Arctic. In 2010, the exercise was resumed after a 16-year long break, and is presently held on the annual basis.

Russian Northern Fleet will dispatch large ASW ship Admiral Chabanenko, a rescue tug, Su-33 fighters, Il-38 ASW airplane, and Ka-27 ship-based helicopter to the Pomor-2012 joint Russian-Norwegian exercise to be held in May 2012.
