VIDEO: USS New York Wins “Best Ship of Class Ship Store Sales and Service Award”

Sales Division aboard amphibious landing dock ship USS New York (LPD 21) received the “Best Ship of Class Ship Store Sales and Service Award” for fiscal year 2011, Jan. 22.

New York achieved the highest cumulative score based on their supply management certification (SMC) and customer satisfaction scores. New York’s retail operations division received an SMC score of 99.01 and provided customer satisfaction “second to none,” according to crew surveys.

“New York is the pride of the Norfolk Waterfront,” said Rear Adm. David Thomas Jr., commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic. “It’s the day-to-day hard work and crew support which bears out in New York’s continuing tradition of excellence.”

Sales division earned approximately $1 million in sales on a nine month deployment of which $189 thousand was transferred to the Morale Welfare and Recreation. New York’s emblematics were in high demand during the ship’s maiden deployment.

“I couldn’t be prouder of New York’s ship services team as they received this prestigious ‘Best in Class’ award today,” said Capt. Jon Kreitz, commanding officer. “They earned it through their tremendous efforts providing superb support to our Sailors and Marines each and every day.”

“They truly are the best,” he added.

“To be the best at anything is not by chance,” said Capt. Christopher Brunett, executive officer. “It requires strong leadership and a lot of hard work. That is exactly what we have on New York. ‘Best of Class’ is one good example of how this ship’s crew leads on the waterfront.”

New York recently returned from its maiden deployment to Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf as part of Iwo Jima amphibious readiness group.

The USS NEW YORK is the fifth San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, she has 73/4 tons of World Trade Center steel in her bow and was commissioned into U.S. Navy service on November 7, 2009.
