ESPS Alborán Assists British Trawler in Distress

Authorities

The Spanish Navy offshore patrol boat ‘Alborán’, currently engaged in the albacore surveillance and protection campaign 500 miles off Cape Finisterre, assisted a British trawler with flooded holds requesting help.

The OPV received a distress call from a trawler with eleven fishermen on board and proceeded to provide the requested assistance. A support team was dispatched and, after assessing the situation, different material like a water pump, bilge pump and a portable ejector were transferred to the trawler.

Following instructions from the OPV, the fishing boat set out for the nearest port while the crew and the support team worked bailing out the water that kept pouring in.

Early in the evening the main problem was fixed and the damaged bulkheads repaired. The support team remained on board just in case, and the trawler was escorted until her arrival in port.
