USA: Naval Station Norfolk Hosts Change of Command Ceremony

Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 121 held a change of command ceremony aboard Naval Station Norfolk, Jan. 11.

Cmdr. Daryle D. Cardone relieved Cmdr. Timothy J. Slentz in front of members of Carrier Strike Group Eight, Carrier Air Wing Seven, VAW-121, and friends and family.

After the opening remarks and rendering of colors, the commander of Carrier Air Wing Seven, Capt. Terry S. Morris, congratulated Slentz on the many successes VAW-121 accomplished under his command.

“This command is on a wonderful course and it is due to your leadership and continues toward greatness,” said Morris. “I cannot thank you enough for allowing me to share this change of command with you. I wish you nothing but success.”

Before reading his orders, Slentz reminisced about his time as commander of VAW-121 and credited his success to having an incredible group of Sailors.

“It has been the greatest honor of my career to serve with you,” said Slentz. “No commanding officer succeeds alone, and I have been blessed with so many talented people who make this squadron so successful with their daily contributions.”

Slentz’s next assignment will be at Strike Force Training Atlantic (CSFTL).

The incoming commanding officer, from Nanticoke, Penn., graduated from the University of Wilkes-Barre in 1993 and received his commission from Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Dec. 1995.

Before becoming VAW-121’s executive officer and now commanding officer, some of Cardone’s assignments include VAW-125 and as Administrative Officer and Maintenance Officer in VAW-121. He also served on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations as Special Assistant to the Director, Flag Officer Management and Distribution (NOOF), in Washington D.C., and as executive officer at VAW-120. Cardone said he is looking forward to his time as commander of VAW-121 and knows that the command will still hold to the high standard of excellence as it did under the command of Slentz.

“This is our second operational tour together and I have learned a ton from him. It has been my honor to serve as your executive officer,” said Cardone. “I am truly honored to serve beside each and every one of you. I feel incredibly fortunate to become your commanding officer today.”

Cmdr. Ryan J. Bryla assumed duties as VAW-121 Executive Officer.
