German Frigate FGS BAYERN Holds Change of Command Ceremony

In Djibouti on 6 December the Change of Command ceremony of Commander Task Force 465 was held on board the EU NAVFOR German frigate FGS BAYERN.

Rear Admiral Thomas Jugel handed over the responsibility to Captain Jorge Manso, Spanish Navy, in a ceremony attended by military and civilian guests, including the German Minister of Defence, Thomas de Maizière. Rear Admiral Christian Canova, French Navy, Deputy Commander EU NAVFOR represented the Operation Commander, Rear Admiral Duncan Potts, from the Operation Headquarters in Northwood, England.

During his final speech, Rear Admiral Jugel highlighted the success of the mission.

“I think we have been one hundred percent successful. Not a single World Food Program Ship has been highjacked. I would like to thank all my sailors, airmen and soldiers who have made it possible”.

Captain Jorge Manso responded – “It is an honour for me to have the opportunity of being appointed as the new Commanding Officer TF 465. I will assure to fulfil my position that has just been handed over to me. For the next few months I will have the privilege to represent the European Union in an operation whose main course is to protect the World Food Program Ships and to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those suffering the famine in the Horn of Africa.”  

Rear Admiral Canova congratulated Read Admiral Jugel for his highly successful command at sea and addressing the new commander he said: “Jorge, we face new challenges in 2012 and you have my confidence and full support, I wish you a good hand in the coming months”.
