OSI and TKMS to collaborate on Canadian Navy’s next-gen submarine project

OSI Maritime Systems (OSI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with German shipbuilding major TKMS to explore opportunities in systems integration and maritime capability development for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP).

Under the terms of the MoU, the companies intend to establish a framework for technical and commercial dialogue to explore integrating OSI’s navigation software, ECPINS, into TKMS’s naval platforms for CPSP purposes.

Developed in Canada, ECPINS is the only third-party Warship Electronic Chart Display and Information System (WECDIS) solution type approved to NATO STANAG 4564. The software is deployed across 18 classes of submarines and is currently in service on more than 60 submarines operated by NATO.

“This MOU reflects OSI’s enthusiasm for the objectives of Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy by strengthening domestic capability, fostering innovation, and building strategic partnerships. Through our collaboration with TKMS, we are creating a pathway to ensure our navy is sailing with the best-class submarine navigation suite,” Jim Girard, President & CEO, OSI Maritime Systems, said.

“This collaboration reflects a strong alignment between OSI and TKMS in advancing integrated maritime capabilities, and we are proud that OSI is recognized as a global leader in tactical navigation technology, and that we are recognized as a “Made in Canada” solution. We look forward to an ongoing relationship with TKMS both at home and abroad,” Jim Davison, VP, Business Development, OSI Maritime Systems, commented.

TKMS recently awarded Valbruna ASW an initial order for approximately 70 tonnes of non-magnetic submarine steel as part of efforts to support the CPSP.

The CPSP is a Government of Canada procurement initiative launched to replace the Royal Canadian Navy’s Victoria-class submarines.

The project aims to procure up to 12 submarines to enable sustained operations in the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic regions.
