949 Nuclear-Powered Attack Submarine to Get Onyx, Caliber Cruise Missile Systems

Sisters of Project 949 nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) Kursk perished in 2000 will be rearmed with cruise missile systems Onyx and Caliber, reported RIA Novosti on Dec 12 referring to a high-ranking representative of Russian defense industry.

At present, subs of this type are armed with Granit cruise missiles.

“Today, Rubin Design Bureau​ maintains a technical project related to repair and modernization of Project 949 submarines. These subs will be rearmed with cruise missiles Onyx and Caliber“, said the interviewee. He emphasized that designers had managed to place missiles in the Granit launching tubes without hull adaptation and even increased combat load.

Repair and modernization will be performed by Zvezdochka shipyard (Severodvinsk) and Zvezda shipyard in the Far East.
