The announcement was made on July 7 during the NATO Summit Defence Industry Forum in Ankara, Türkiye. The UAVs will complement NATO’s existing Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) fleet, which operates from Sigonella Air Base in Italy.

Designed for maritime surveillance, the MQ-4C Triton is capable of flying missions lasting up to 24 hours at altitudes exceeding 15 kilometers. Equipped with long-range sensors, the platform is intended to improve NATO’s ability to detect threats, protect sea lines of communication and support operations in challenging environments, including the Arctic and the High North.

The acquisition will be delivered through a transatlantic industrial consortium. Northrop Grumman will manufacture the aircraft, while Airbus Defence and Space, together with other European companies, will provide the ground segment, command and control systems, data management services, infrastructure and mission support.

According to NATO, the program builds on transatlantic industrial cooperation developed over the past decade and is intended to further modernize the alliance’s ISR capabilities.

The procurement is aimed at expanding NATO-owned surveillance assets as the alliance continues to strengthen its intelligence and maritime domain awareness capabilities across Europe and the North Atlantic.
