Divers of Royal Netherlands Navy Recover Body of Missing Dutchman

On 10 February 2012, divers of the Royal Netherlands Navy recovered the body of a missing Dutchman from a German lake. The military personnel had assisted German police in the search for the man at the request of the mayor of Horst aan de Maas.

The 43-year-old Dutchman from Grubbenvorst went missing on 3 February after he had gone ice-skating on the Krickenbecker See in Nettental, just over the border near Venlo. The German emergency services immediately mounted a large-scale search-and-rescue operation. On 4 February, German fire brigade divers searched twice under the ice for the man. They were forced to halt those attempts due to the freezing cold and icy conditions. The German authorities gave permission to the civil authorities of the province of Limburg to continue the search with diving capacity from the Netherlands Defence organisation. Five naval divers of the Defence Diving Group then searched the lake using high-tech sonar equipment, and at around 16.15 hrs they found the man’s body. The military personnel recovered the body and handed it over to the North Limburg police.
