Italian Navy’s Cassiopea class patrol boats Libra P 402 rescued almost 500 migrants on Thursday night, January 15.

As part of the Frontex Triton operation, the vessel encountered two boats carrying migrants 60 nautical miles off Tripoli.

The boats were carrying 111 and 175 migrants respectively. Once they were rescued by a port authority vessel, the migrants boarded the patrol boat and set sail towards the Italian coast.

Frontex is European Union’s effort to help the Italian Navy with migrant search and rescue operations.
