Authorities

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG 67) participated in a bilateral underway engagement, PASSEX, with ships from the Turkish Navy in the Black Sea, Feb. 21, 2015.

Cmdr. James Quaresimo, USS Cole (DDG 67) commanding officer, said:

This is the fourth exercise we’ve been able to perform in the Black Sea with our allies and the first one we’ve been able to accomplish with our Turkish allies during this period. Working with such a wide variety of partners improves interoperability and enhances the effectiveness of operations.

These underway engagements consist of a series of at-sea scenarios designed to enhance maritime capabilities among participating nations and they typically include tactical maneuvering exercises, passenger transfers, bridge-to-bridge communication drills, and simulated threat defenses with aircraft.
