Indian Navy to Commission New Stealth Destroyer

Indian Navy will receive a new stealth destroyer, INS Kochi, which will be commissioned this month by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.

The Kolkata-class guided missile destroyer was built by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL). According to The Economic Times, INS Kochi is the second of three domestically built Kolkata-class destroyers.

First ship of the class, INS Kolkata has already been commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year while the third ship, INS Chennai, is still under construction.

The Kolkata-class are based on the Delhi-class and are fitted with modern weapons and sensor systems.

The destroyers are equipped with an action information system and an atmospheric control system.

Indian Navy expects the new stealth destroyers to demonstrate superior anti-surface warfare and anti-submarine capabilities.

INS Kolkata is also scheduled to fire a long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) later this year. Called Barak 8, the missile is being jointly developed by India and Israel.
