General Dynamics to carry out major overhaul of USS Essex

Authorities

The U.S. Navy’s Southwest Regional Maintenance Center has awarded General Dynamics a contract for the phased maintenance availability (PMA) of USS Essex (LHD-2).

Under the $156,5 million contract, GD will plan and perform depot-level maintenance, alterations, and modifications on the U.S. Navy’s amphibious assault ship.

The work will be done at General Dynamics’ San Diego, California, shipyard and is expected to be completed by June 2017.

The 844 ft (257 m) long USS Essex (LHD-2) was built at Huntington Ingalls Industries in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and commissioned on October 17, 1992. Essex returned from a seven-month deployment to the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operations (AOO) in December 2015 to start its phased maintenance availability.
