The agreement was signed between Marine Specialised Technology (MST), Damen Naval and Germany’s procurement authority BAAINBw, resolving previous design challenges and clearing the way for production of the upgraded craft.

The amendment expands the scope of the programme and introduces several upgrades to the MST FRISC platform. The updated RHIBs will feature integrated communications systems, including multi-channel tactical radios, alongside improved situational awareness through the addition of new sensors and user interfaces.

The package also includes an updated mission architecture with advanced workstations and network systems. Other changes cover upgraded seating, improved electromagnetic compatibility, additional spare parts and tools, as well as adjustments to the equipment layout aimed at increasing modularity and onboard functionality.

“This amendment reflects the close and constructive collaboration between Damen Naval, BAAINBw and MST. The enhanced communications and mission systems significantly strengthen the role of the FRISC within the F126 programme, enabling seamless integration with the frigate’s architecture. The planned changes and improvements will ensure that the platform can adapt to changing requirements,” Bertin Mayer, Project Manager at Damen Naval, said.

“This agreement represents a critical turning point. By aligning on enhanced specifications and resolving longstanding technical queries, we are now fully positioned to move into production with confidence and momentum, delivering a future-ready solution aligned with modern naval operational requirements,” Andy Davies, MST Project Manager, added.

The delivery of the first modernized RHIBs will take place according to an agreed schedule and marks an important step towards strengthening maritime security and the operational flexibility of the German Navy’s F126 fleet.

Dutch shipbuilder Damen Naval received the first contract to build four vessels in this class. In addition to this, Damen and the German Navy agreed the construction of two more frigates. The program is valued at more than €5 billion.

With a length of 166 meters and a displacement of around 10,000 tonnes, these vessels are set to become the largest warships in the German Navy. They can accommodate 198 soldiers. Furthermore, they will engage targets across air, water, and underwater domains.
