MacGregor wins another order to supply deck handling solutions for US Navy’s T-ATS newbuilds

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has secured an order to provide deck handling solutions to two US Naval Sea Systems Command’s towing, salvage and rescue ships (T-ATS) to be built at Gulf Island Shipyards LLC, a subsidiary of Gulf Island Fabrication Inc.

The order follows those secured in 2019.

The deliveries are planned during the last quarter of 2021 through to the first quarter of 2022.

According to MacGregor, this order represents the 4th and 5th shipsets that will be supplied to the new T-ATS class, which will be deployed for worldwide naval service including open-ocean towing, supporting salvage operations and submarine rescue missions.

Scope of supply includes deck machinery, towing winch, traction winch, shark jaws, towing pins/pop-up pins, stern roller, offshore crane and other accessories. 

“This new order further confirms MacGregor’s position as a trusted provider of solutions for naval logistic vessels, with equipment installed on a broad spectrum of ship types,” Leif Bystrøm, Head of Offshore Solutions Division, MacGregor, commented.

In April this year, Gulf Island Fabrication was awarded a contract for the construction of two additional Navajo-class T-ATS for the US Navy.

This represented the navy’s execution of its fourth and fifth options for Gulf Island’s construction of five T-ATS vessels that will be built in the company’s facility in Houma, Louisiana. The US Navy has remaining options for three additional vessels.

Navajo-class ships will be capable of towing US Navy ships and will have 6,000 square feet of deck space for embarked systems. The platform will be 263 feet long, have a beam of 59 feet, and can carry a load of 1,796 tons.
