According to GRSE, the simultaneous commissioning of three major surface vessels is a first for an Indian shipyard and highlights the nation’s growing capacity to design and build advanced naval platforms domestically.

The three vessels represent different operational capabilities within the Indian Navy. INS Dunagiri is a Project 17A stealth guided-missile frigate and part of the Nilgiri class, designed for multi-dimensional warfare across surface, air and subsurface domains. Built by GRSE and designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, the frigate is intended to strengthen the navy’s frontline combat capabilities.

INS Sanshodhak is the fourth and final survey vessel (large) built under the Indian Navy’s survey vessel program. The ship is designed to conduct coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys, chart navigational routes and gather oceanographic data in support of both naval operations and maritime safety.

INS Agray is an anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft (ASW-SWC) developed to enhance the Navy’s ability to detect and track underwater threats in coastal and littoral waters. The vessel is part of a broader program aimed at strengthening India’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Modi said the three ships symbolize India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense production, noting that they were designed and built in the country. He described the commissioning as an important step toward achieving the goals of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and strengthening national security.

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan said the event demonstrated the growing momentum of India’s warship construction sector. He noted that the commissioning followed another triple induction ceremony held in Mumbai last year, reflecting the expansion of the country’s shipbuilding capacity and technological capabilities.
